NSFW | Photography Book by Joël Alain Dervaux | ‘IMPROVISATIONS’

The artist’s book Improvisations brings together a selection of 80 photographs drawn from a large corpus built up over more than a decade.

In a delimited and permanent space, men and women come to put themselves naked and bare to inscribe a bodily trace, take the risk of revealing an interiority and revealing to my gaze, the mark of desire. The determined moment, the identical place, the natural light create the conditions of a space where their presence is revealed, which I record on the film as signifiers, recognized signs, improvisations.

Conceived with the graphic designer Odilon Coutarel, the book makes it possible to consider, echoing the corpus, appearances, disappearances, affirmations and restraints of presence to create a renewed reading of my photographic practice.

In response to the stakes of my work, certain images are covered with a white veil, which retains them in a white light, in contrast with others which impose themselves without filter. The papers used offer transparencies, translucencies and superimpositions which become the support for a sensual transmission of these gazes placed on naked bodies, of postures and gestures, of clues that I recognize as a trace of desire.

The text intervenes like a thread, a poetry by Valérie Fougeirol which interferes in a flow, which runs, repeats itself, where the words arise and light up, becoming signifiers in their turn.
